History of Grama Panchayat
Historical records show that Vamanapuram Village Union came into existence in the period 1939-40 (1115 AD) even before independence. A vast area including Vamanapuram, Keezchery, Anakudy, Mithrimmala, Kallara, Thumbode, Thengumkode, Pangode and Bharathanur parts was within the boundaries of this village union at that time. Nedumangad Tehsildar Velayudhan Nair was the president and Mutual Aid and Cooperation Inspector was the vice president. In the village union administrative committee, P.W.D. Section Officer, Attingal Agriculture Inspector and Vamanapuram Sub-Registrar were the government representatives and Venkatachella Sharma, Kunjan Pillai, Gangadharan, Govindakurup, Narayanan Nadar and Asanaru Pillai were the people's representatives. During the period of this administrative committee, which came into existence under the 9th Travancore Village Union Act of 1115 CE, kerosene lamps were installed as street lights in various parts of the panchayat. Midwives were appointed to visit the houses and conduct inspections and sweepers were appointed to clean the area. By 1117 CE, the village union was reorganized and some parts of the Nellanadu half including Venjaramoodu and some parts of the Pullampara half were added to form the new Vamanapuram Village Union. The Vamanapuram Inn was used as the Village Union office. It is seen in the records that Adv. Madhava Kurup remained in power as the president of the new village union for 4 years and Padmanabha Pillai as the president for 2 years. Vamanapuram was one of the earliest panchayats formed in the taluk on 01/01/1958 as per the Thiru-Kochi Panchayat Act of 1951. With this, there was a significant change in the administrative boundaries of the panchayat. The first Vamanapuram panchayat consisted of eight wards including Keezcheri, Vamanapuram, Anamkuzhi, Kanjirampara, Kallara, Thumbode, Mitrimmala and Aruvippuram. The wards of Irulur Melattumoozhi, which are part of the present panchayat boundaries, were then in Pullampara panchayat. The first president of the panchayat was M. Shahul Hameed. When the panchayat was reorganized in 1963, the face of this panchayat changed again. Some parts of the panchayat were also transferred to Nellanadu panchayat. S. Krishnan Nair was elected as the president and N. Paramuvaidyan as the vice-president of the new administrative committee that came into existence on 18-12-1963. This was the longest-serving governing body in the history of the panchayat. This governing body, which devised and implemented many welfare schemes, took unanimous decisions on all matters except the division of the panchayat in 1977. With the reorganisation of the panchayat in 1977, the wards of Meethoor and Melattumoozhi, which were part of the panchayat, were merged with the Vamanapuram panchayat, and the wards of Kallara and Thumbode were transferred to the Kallara panchayat. The number of wards was reorganised and increased to nine at that time. Following the 73rd constitutional amendment, the post of Vamanapuram Panchayat President was reserved for women under the Panchayat Raj Act that came into force in the state in 1994. The wards were reorganised and increased to ten. Many important government institutions existed here at the time of the establishment of the panchayat. These include the Sub-Registrar Office, Chavadi, Anchalapis, Dharma Hospital and Police Out Post. After independence, many offices and institutions that were allocated as the center of Vamanapuram have been lost to the panchayat, knowingly or unknowingly. Although many important institutions such as Devaswom Board High School, NES Block, Primary Health Center, Veterinary Hospital, ICDS Office are mentioned in the inscriptions as Vamanapuram, the reality is that they are kilometers away from the panchayat boundaries. However, many institutions are functioning in the government, semi-government and cooperative sectors in the panchayat area.
Local knowledge-history
The Thiruvamanapuram temple is the most special of the three Vamana temples in the old Travancore area. It is believed that this place got its name Vamanapuram in connection with this temple. Old-timers say that Vamanapuram was ruled by the Kaippuzha royal family and that once the farmers here organized and drove back the Dutch army. If we look at history, Vamanapuram was considered the most important center in the taluk after Nedumangad since ancient times. That is probably why Vamanapuram was known as the second capital of Nedumangad. The historical importance of this place is clear from the fact that Vamanapuram was chosen as one of the headquarters of their cavalry during the British rule. The history of Vamanapuram related to the freedom struggle is intertwined with the Kallara-Pangode struggle. The incident of the murder of a police officer named Vazhuthakkad Kunjukrishnan in the Kanjirampara area and the incident of Kilukki Muthamma setting fire to the Britisher's lorry are the incidents of Karikakkam Meerasayu, Karumba Abdul Razak and Vathi Krishnan cutting down trees on both sides of the road.
