Through the Panchayat

Vamanapuram Panchayat started its operations on 01/01/1958 in the old building where the current KSEB office is located, adjacent to M.C. Road. The first Vamanapuram Panchayat consisted of eight wards including Keezcheri, Vamanapuram, Anamkuzhi, Kanjirampara, Kallara, Thumbode, Mitrimmala, and Aruvippuram. The present-day Irulur Melattumoozhi wards, which are within the boundaries of the panchayat, were then in Pullampara Panchayat. The first president of the panchayat was M. Shahul Hameed. When the panchayat was reorganized in 1963, the face of this panchayat changed again. Some parts of the panchayat were also transferred to Nellanad Panchayat. S. Krishnan Nair was elected as the president and N. Paramuvaidyan as the vice-president of the new administrative committee that came into existence on 18-12-1963. This was the longest-serving governing body in the history of the panchayat. This governing body, which devised and implemented many welfare schemes, took unanimous decisions on all matters except the division of the panchayat in 1977. With the reorganisation of the panchayat in 1977, the wards of Meethoor and Melattumoozhi, which were part of the panchayat, were merged with the Vamanapuram panchayat, and the wards of Kallara and Thumbode were transferred to the Kallara panchayat. The number of wards was reorganised and increased to nine at that time. Following the 73rd constitutional amendment, the post of Vamanapuram Panchayat President was reserved for women under the Panchayat Raj Act that came into force in the state in 1994. The wards were reorganised and increased to ten. Many important government institutions existed here at the time of the establishment of the panchayat. These include the Sub-Registrar Office, Chavadi, Anchalapis, Dharma Hospital and Police Out Post. The panchayat has lost many offices and institutions that were allocated as Vamanapuram headquarters after independence, knowingly or unknowingly. Although many important institutions such as Devaswom Board High School, NES Block, Primary Health Center, Veterinary Hospital, ICDS Office are mentioned in the inscriptions as Vamanapuram, the reality is that they are kilometers away from the panchayat boundaries. However, many institutions are functioning in the government-semi-government-cooperative sectors in the panchayat area.

Geography-Climate
Vamanapuram Panchayat, located in Edanad, one of the three geographical regions of Kerala, is spread over an area of 23.87 sq. km. from east to west. Generally speaking, it is a region that slopes towards the west. Although the slope is towards the west, there are many hills rising more than 75 meters above sea level from Kalamachal ward in the westernmost part to Irulur ward in the easternmost part. The summer and rains experienced in other parts of the district are almost the same in Vamanapuram panchayat. Generally speaking, a balanced climate is experienced. According to the topography, this panchayat can be divided into 6 parts, namely high hill areas, high plains, slope areas, plains, riverine areas, and low plains. The important hill areas rising about 75 meters above sea level are Pazhavilakunnu, Pezhungamukkulkunnu, Kailasath Kunnu, Mahadevan Kunnu, Charupara Kunnu, Thazhutala Kunnu, etc. The relatively high areas fall into the category of high plains. The population density is also high. Areas like Anachal, Pallikunnu, Paraparamukhu, Kolinji, Mulavan, Kathiruvila fall under this zone. Coconut, banana, pepper, rubber, etc. are cultivated in the fertile and well-drained soil. Most of the land area of the panchayat is classified as sloping land. With the spread of rubber cultivation, the sloping land has also been taken over by rubber. Except for the steeply sloping areas, the other sloping areas are densely populated. The wards of Anachal, Kalamachal, Kariveli, Melattumoozhi, and Anakkudi, including the panchayat headquarters, Vamanapuram, are classified as plain areas. These are also the most densely populated areas in the panchayat. The most fertile land in the panchayat is the riverside areas. Coconut is the main crop here. Although it is an area prone to flooding twice a year, it is still not very densely populated. The low plains are paddy fields. The largest of the paddy fields is Anakuzhi Ela. The productivity of paddy in the panchayat area is relatively low.

Agriculture
A fundamental change in the existing land tenure system came after the 1957 cabinet came to power. In the 1950s, only the upper castes, starting with the dominant Nair community, owned land. As a result of the popular uprising of the state-wide agricultural labor organizations, the land reform laws that came into effect later, today more than 90% of the people in the panchayat area are nominally
