The Steering Committee of the Gram Panchayat is an important coordinating body. It plays a crucial role in streamlining the functioning of Local Self Government Institutions (LSGIs) in Kerala.

Steering Committee: Structure and Duties
The steering committee of a gram panchayat usually comprises the following:

Panchayat President (Chairman)

Standing Committee Chairmen (Chairmen of Finance, Development, Welfare, Health and Education Standing Committees)

Panchayat Secretary

Key Functions
The key functions of the Steering Committee are:

Administrative Coordination: Before the Panchayat's Administrative Committee (Grama Panchayat Committee) meets, have a clear understanding of the agendas to be discussed in the meeting and plan things accordingly.

Implementation of decisions: Ensure follow-up actions for the effective and timely implementation of decisions taken by the Governing Body and those under the responsibility of the Standing Committees.

Standing Committee Reports: Objectively present and help ensure that decisions made by standing committees are accepted at the governing body meeting.

Development Planning: Coordinate the activities taking place at the ward level at the panchayat level and evaluate the progress of the projects.

Emergency: If any Standing Committee is unable to function effectively due to resignation of its members or for any other reason, its powers and duties shall vest in the Steering Committee under Section 162B of the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act until a new committee is formed.
